Studio Latest June 2025
I spent the first four months of this year reorganising and refurbishing my studio. As usual this had a ripple effect
Tea? explores the importance of in-person communication in a digital age. Using the evocative qualities of still life, the series highlights the emotional and social value of face-to-face interactions, which digital communication often lacks.
Through the familiar ritual of tea, these works evoke nostalgia and shared memories, encouraging viewers to reflect on the power of connection and the impact of real-life conversations on our well-being.
I am passionate about capturing the intricate beauty of our world, particularly the natural world. My work, rooted in realism, has evolved across various genres throughout my career.
My latest series, a collection of still life paintings advocating for a return to real-life social interactions, will be on exhibit from November 16–22 at the Project Gallery, QCAD Galleries, Griffith University, Southbank, Brisbane.
Explore my collections to immerse yourself in nature’s beauty—ranging from detailed still life pieces to landscapes and dynamic Pacific Ocean waves, there’s something for everyone.

I am sorry this blog has been a while coming,
I have been busy with assessments as I come to

I spent today in the studio drawing up a new still life, I have been playng with the set up since Monday. I had a fantastic day out yesterday sketching the urban landscape in Southbank with the talented stuartmeyerplath. This loose watercolour sketch was the result.
I did discover one problem with rearranging my studio - I struggle to remember the new home for some items leading to extended searches! Though sometimes I have discovered the items have been borrowed by the family. 🤣 #juliecanefineart #brisbaneartist #australianartist #urbansketching #fineart #outinnature #localartist #watercolour #stilllife
A bit of the second layer on this new wave painting - I have a few works in progress. #juliecanefineart. See my website for finished works. Link in bio.
I know I haven’t been posting much, life with two athletes in the family is a little crazy!
At Easter I got the family together and after a struggle we finally erected the miss-named “Easy Shed” which has helped with storage - much needed!
Then after a week finishing the sanding and polishing of the table tops, I have finished the studio refit, though there is a bit of sorting out still to do. I am super excited about this!
This week I have stretched some canvases, added a couple of layers of gesso to them and got the go ahead for the commission I am working on. That is now drawn up and I will start the first layer of painting this arvo. Have a fabulous weekend everyone. 🥰
It is that time of year! The local insect population decided to ‘help’ me with the first layer of this sketch and have enhanced this section it by adding themselves to the paint - see the black dots. Perhaps they thought it needed some wildlife 😂. My top tip is to wait for it to dry before dealing with them.
Back in the studio today following a week at Nationals with the Queensland and NSW juniors. I am delighted to share that I have been awarded a Highly Commended for my painting - A cup of tea and a chat, I had the pleasure of attending the opening night via Zoom on Friday. I am very grateful to Callinan Chambers for organising this art prize, and for being recognised for my endeavours. A huge congratulations to the winner for her beautiful drawing.
We had a delightful morning away from our sports trip and escaped to visit the awesome Adelaide Botanical Hardens to view the Chihuly exhibition of glass sculptures-they are amazing! Here is a selection …

Had a great few hours this afternoon playing with a colour gamut for a painting with a limited colour palette. I will now test these out in a small scale sketch. There will probably be some fine tuning.
In other news the studio rebuild is progressing well, but it is a slow process. Have a fantastic weekend everyone. 😃
I have spent the last 6 weeks moving stuff about, it feels like a never ending game of hokey pokey! In, out, in again etc!
I have been attempting to clear the four years of clutter that built while I was studying, put up a new shed ( still a WIP) and sort my studio.
Trips to support my two and QLD junior athletes , along with a cyclone threat (missed us by a scant km - phew) to contend with have all made for plans that resemble shifting sand as they changed so fast.
This is today’s chaos, but hopefully I am near to fixing the new units to the wall and adding the work top. - please wish me luck. It has been a long journey!
It will be amazing when it is finished! (or so I keep telling myself)
Last week was very busy, on Wednesday I had the great pleasure of a lovely afternoon out, delivering a limited edition reproduction of The Fig Tree to one of my lovely collectors, it was fabulous to meet her.
I followed this by a trip to @Redlandartgallery to see the #RedlandArtAwards2024 finalists and I must say it was a superbly presented exhibition! Here I am beside my painting, I got to see my friend @Sarahmufford `s gorgeous geometric abstract painting `Kashan`, the show is definitely worth a visit - it is open until the 28th of January.
I rounded off the afternoon with a lovely catch up over a cuppa with my friend @leighlynham.

On Tuesday I had the pleasure of attending my graduation where I was awarded the degree of Master of Visual arts with Distinction - a busy but rewarding day! I am grateful to all the staff at QCAD Griffith University and the friends I have made particularly @stuartmeyerplath who I shared classes with and who put up with me for three and a half of the four years I was studying - thank you!
